Van Zandt Smith was a prominent Fort Worth attorney, and a grandson of Fort Worth pioneer Major K. M. Van Zandt. He was born in 1899, the son of Leroy Smith and Ida Van Zandt Smith. His mother, Ida Van Zandt Smith, was a daughter of K. M. Van Zandt and his first wife. Smith was a veteran of the First World War.
